Women of USA Hockey Profiled in New Universal Sports Documentary
Los Angeles, February 3, 2010: In a new, joint venture documentary
production between NBC News and Universal Sports, host/producer/reporter Clare Duffy
skated and trained
with the team at
camps in Colorado, CO Springs and Blaine, MN. The one-hour special, Blood,
Sweat and Cookies: Training with the Women of USA Hockey examines the
grueling training, difficulty of the women’s game, and how a relatively new women’s
team sport galvanizes a group of elite hockey players.
Duffy, a producer for NBC Nightly News, spent
several days with the team. Most of the footage was shot by co-producer/videographer
Laura Allenbaugh and Duffy shot some of the footage herself. The executive
producer of the special is Universal Sports Executive Producer David Michaels.
“This documentary gives us a chance to show how
much work goes into women’s hockey, and I also wanted to test myself and see
how I could hold up,” says Duffy, 44, who started playing hockey at age 39 and
plays for multiple teams in the New York City area. “We wanted to show the new women’s game, and to give extra
exposure to a sport that doesn’t get a lot of attention outside the Olympics.”
“It’s a rare look inside a world that we
usually don’t have access to. While
Clare remains a reporter, she is accepted into their group and provides insights
which are truly special. The
quality of work done by NBC News is something we’d like to continue to tap into
for Universal Sports,” says Michaels.
“Blood, Sweat and Cookies gives fans of women’s hockey some new insight,
and will make new fans of those who generally haven’t paid much attention to
the sport.”
